How to use XML Sitemap Generator effectively
Which URLs belong in an XML sitemap?
Use absolute canonical URLs for public pages that you want search engines to discover. Do not add redirected, deleted, or intentionally noindexed URLs. A sitemap is a discovery aid, not an instruction that forces indexing.
How to prepare the URL list
Enter one complete URL per line, such as https://example.com/services/. Remove duplicates and tracking parameters, and verify the preferred HTTPS and hostname variants before generating the XML.
How to publish and verify the file
Download the generated sitemap.xml, publish it on your site, then open the URL in a browser to confirm a successful response. Submit its address in Google Search Console and review reported errors over time.
XML Sitemap Generator: preparing a canonical URL list
The generator turns URL entries into sitemap XML. Generating or submitting the file does not guarantee indexing.
Example input
https://example.com/ https://example.com/services/ https://example.com/services/?utm_source=newsletter
Example output
XML entries using <url><loc>...</loc></url> for selected canonical URLs. The UTM variant may be excluded after verifying its canonical relationship.
Weak implementation
Adding every tracking-parameter URL, invalid addresses or fabricated lastmod dates.
Better implementation
Select absolute canonical HTTPS URLs and use lastmod only when it reflects meaningful changes. Publish the generated file at a stable URL and verify it returns HTTP 200.
How to interpret output
Validate the XML structure, sample the listed URLs and review redirects. You can advertise the sitemap through robots.txt and submit it in Search Console.
Review checklist
- Are URLs absolute and using the intended protocol?
- Have unnecessary duplicates and parameter variants been removed?
- Are lastmod values grounded in real updates?
- Is the published sitemap accessible and maintained?
